Speech 111 Review

I enjoyed taking this class. I had experience giving speeches in the military, but giving them in the "real world" is so much different. The use of expression is a major difference. I think I will take a lot from this class. I am going into marketing (I know: "and you don't watch TV?") so speaking to groups will defiantly be part of the job.

I used quite a few internet sources for my speeches. I wish that "the net" would have been bigger when I was in highschool. When I started highschool it was still a dream. My class work would have been so much easier if I would have had this wonderful tool.

Birthdays

I remember when I used to look forward to my birthday. Today I woke up and read the paper, took out the trash and got ready for school. I came to campus took a test then started writing my bloggs. About 10 minutes ago a friend told me happy birthday. I was shocked. I hadn't realized today was my birthday. I guess that's what happens as we grow.

Getting Older

I look at some of the students I go to school with and I feel old. I am 27 and most (not all) of the "kids" I go to school with seem so young. I don't ever remember beening that young. I have a feeling that this is just the tip of the iceberg. I am sure there are others out there who look at me and say I don't remember being so young.

Sleepy Bean

My daughter Dylennon, who we call Bean, finally slept through the night last night. She will be four months old in two weeks. My wife and I were very pleased to wake up and see the sun was out instead of the moon.

Persuasive Speech #2

I chose to limit my topic to one of the subpoints of my last speech. Some of the citations I already had prepaired from before. I think that I was more comfortable presenting a smaller topic. I havn't received my grade back on this one yet so hopfully a smaller topic payed off.

I chose to use a political ideolegy I heard from a friend of mine who holds a masters of political science. He and I talked while I was in Michagin for his little brothers funneral. Finding sources to back-up the ideas was a little tricky. I think that I will never use such a large topic in a school speech agian.

Monroe's Sequence in Advertisement

I do not watch TV so I really can't answer this question. I really don't watch TV, the last time I saw anything on TV was at my parents house over Christmas. I really can't remember any advertisement well enough to apply all of monroe's sequence to it.

Blogging

Blogging is an assignment but it is also kind of fun. I write about what I am told to, but I don't have to worry about resrictive language like that of a turm paper. I may set up a blog just for fun after the semester.

Weekly meetings

My normal weekly meeting has been moved to a byweekly. I like the fact that when I have a Saturday morning off I now only have a 50% chance of having to go to work for a meeting. Not great news but good news.

Diamond clarity

I was talking with our local diamond supplier the other day and she told me that the standard IGI format for grading diamond clarity may change. This could be a real headache. I didn't get any specifics from her but any change would mean having to relearn the system and how to convey it to the customer who is familiar with the old system.

Informative speech #2

I had more of an idea of what was expected for this speech. I greatly preferred to give my speech to live audience rather than taping it. I chose discuss the "4-C's" of diamonds. Again I chose a topic I was familiar with which aided me in my confidence and delivery.

The experience of my meeting on 4 Feb. 2006 was rewarding. There was a clear deffinition of goals and expectations. Durring the discussion section of the meeting I was able to ask questions of my co-workers and manager and many questions were presented to me.

The language of this meeting was proffesional. The transitions were rather jolting however. My manager touched on one subject, moved to another then another then back to the first subject. He gets sidetracked very easily.

I attended my weekly meeting at work on 4 Feb. 2006. My manager, Roma, was the leader of the discussion. There were seven of us at the meeting. We discussed issues related to current sales. Roma also gave us our monthly goals at this meeting. After his presentation we had a discussion period.

I do not watch TV so my reference may be a bit old. The "Bitter Beer Face" comercial was not only entertaining (meets the "attention" section) but points out "need". This beer is better because it's not bitter; in essence.

Don't Get Behind!

This semester has been one of change for me. I am a full time student with a full time job and 5 daughters. This semester I moved, got married, had my fifth child(well my wife did the hard part), and became a foster parent. With all this going on I have fallen a bit behind and, as you can see, am playing "catch-up". Next semester should be smoother. I will at the very least be more proactive in the beginning of the semester, just in case.

Self-Inventory Worksheet

My self inventory worksheet was very rewarding to complete. I sat down and brainstormed, not really thinking about my responses. I learned a lot about myself. I have a great interest in history, philosophy and politics. I read quite a bit on these subjects but never really thought about how much I have read. I was surprised.

I used some training aids and pamphlets from work to write my first informative speech. I think these resources are often overlooked. I found some very useful, and quotable, material in them. Something to consider when writing a speech.

I enjoyed preparing for this speech. I work in sales and used this as a topic for my speech. I have always been told to cover topics I am familiar with so this seemed a perfect match. Giving the speech was a little more difficult than I had anticipated. I was not allowed to use hand movements when I was in the Army. My gestures need some improvement. Also my transition from section to section need some work.

Atheism

I've been doing some reading on Historical figures. I have been surprised by how many avid Atheists are sons of "clergy". Marquis de Condorcet and Frederick Nietzsche are two of the more prominent names I've run across. I wonder if their upbringing turned them away from religion or if it gave them the inherent knowledge most of us spend lifetimes searching for that freed their minds from religion. Just for the record this is just me thinking out loud, no intent to affirm or deny the existence of Deity.

My Fiance and I are now the custodial parents of her 14 year old sister. I am only in my mid 20's so I felt I could identify with what she is going through in life right now. WRONG! Granted, it was my brother and I growing up, so dealing with a little estrogen I knew would be somewhat tricky. I had NO IDEA!

Preparing for Self-Introduction

The Self-Introduction Inventory project was actually very rewarding. I sat down and brainstormed for each question. I learned quite a bit about myself that, technically, I already knew but had not truly realized. It is good to take stock of your self every now and again.

I recently purchased a new DVD camcorder. It's "neat" but the manual reads like a Greek tragedy, long, boring and I don't understand a word of it. I wonder if anyone else has had similar encounters with "instructional manuals"?

Speaking Events I am Likely to Attend

I am most likely to attend speaking events regarding work. I am in a sales and marketing position and have many speaking engagements. I am likely to attend the following: weekly training meetings, quarterly regional sales and marketing meetings, daily sales presentations and an occasional political meeting, i.e. city council meeting or political party meeting/speech.

I attended my weekly training meeting on 28 Jan. 2006.
Here is a highlight of the topics in the book which correspond with the meeting ( they are not in comlete sentences).
- The presentaion followed an orderly style. pp.7
- It was tailored to a specific audience. pp.7
- It was presented in formal language. pp.9
- I get nervouse every time I have to speek in public. It is much like a rollercoaster, I love it. pp.10
- It showed preparation. pp.11
- Channel-Microphone. pp. 19
- Situation- Formal yet not in a large room nor a large audience. Very little interference as everyone was "on the clock" and focused on the presentaion. pp. 22/23
- Showed Honesty and personal dignity. pp.39
- Sighted references (plagiarism). pp.43-47
- I prejudged the speaker. I assumed he would be more proficiant as he holds a high possion in the company. pp.49
- I engaged in active listening. pp.62-64
